American English Dialects in the United States & Canada. Interactive map.
This is extremely interesting, and vindicating. I remember someone told me that Benedict’s accent in The Whistleblower couldn’t possibly be considered “Southern” (because they “grew up in Texas” and know these things), but there you have it. It was definitely a Lowland South dialect, which is a majority of “The South.” Classical Southern is a relatively small area, apparently; it’s the stereotypical Southern drawl that you’ll hear in a lot of media.
This is very interesting, I’m utterly fascinated with dialects and I love that someone finally did one for America.
